Opening Reception: “First Thursday,” September 4, 6-8pm
Artist talk: “Saturday After”, September 6 at noon

Greg Kucera Gallery is excited to announce our eighth exhibition by Seattle artist, Whiting Tennis. Titled Refuge, the exhibition is meant to conjure the idea of art protecting us from the outside world’s turmoil. But the artist discovered a deeper meaning for the term.

PROTO, 2025

I’ve noticed that even within art and artmaking, there is somewhere further inside the seeing and creating- maybe more of a moment than anything else- that offers shelter even from the expectations of art; a refuge within a refuge. As an art viewer who’s well into middle age, I’ve often felt a wave of gratitude when I’m standing next to something wonderful. It starts with an appreciation for the object and the artist, but goes on to include the circumstance: the motivation that brought it into being. It’s like the opposite of taking the artwork for granted.
