Marie Watt

Receiver

Dates May 22 - June 28, 2014

Opening Reception: “First Thursday,” June 5, 6-8pm
Artist talk: “Saturday After”, June 7 at noon

Greg Kucera Gallery is pleased to announce our third exhibition of work by Marie Watt.

The exhibition, RECEIVER, is a continuation of the artist’s exploration of wool blankets, their history of being handed down from generation to generation, and the human stories found within these everyday objects as shelter providers and symbols of security. As a member of the Seneca nation, Watt acknowledges the significant role that blankets play in Native American culture.

Much of the work in this exhibition relates to the artist’s permanent monumental outdoor sculpture recently commissioned by the Tacoma Art Museum for its new Haub Family Wing, opening this autumn. One of the works in the show will feature the arched column design of the Tacoma commission. Another work, MARKER: TRUNK, made of aromatic cedar, is inspired by thoughts about hope chests and blanket as heirlooms. The show will also include blanket tapestries, stitched samplers, a column made of a vertical I-beam stacked with blankets, and small cast bronze and iron works relating to stones and fishing weights.

Sewing Circle Invitation
People are invited to stay and sew during Marie's open-to-the-community sewing circle directly following the June 7th artist talks at the gallery. Marie is also encouraging the community to donate blankets, and their blanket stories, to become part of the Tacoma Art Museum sculpture. These blankets will be transformed into cast bronze. A small silkscreen print will be exchanged for people helping with stitching and blanket contributions.
