Greg Kucera Gallery is excited to announce our third exhibition by Seattle artist, Anthony White. This exhibition is the artist’s continued exploration of concepts represented in his one-person exhibition, Limited Liability, showing at Seattle Art Museum through January 29, 2023.
The title, Extended Warranty, is a sarcastic jab by the artist at a world he continues to explore, celebrate, and criticize. An extended warranty is often sold as a purported necessary protection against disaster. But in reality only certain things, things that will never need repair or replacement, are covered. It is something we will pay for that we will likely never use. If we do end up using it, it is never as good as we hoped.
White’s paintings show us how we present our “curated” selves. These are the images we collect with the hopes that they will bring comfort, inspiration, pleasure. The artist’s overstuffed, cacophonous compositions are a collection of images of things that suggest many promises. Miraculous technological innovations, joy filled references, and aspirational experiences abound in these works. Much like the extended warranty, though, these images of desire fail to fulfill their promise. Instead we just keep collecting and arranging the images until they begin to lose all meaning.
“These works almost act as a ‘cart’ or ‘wish-list’ of past, present and future. Symbols of found reference tools that are employed to customize the interpretation of consuming media while also featuring updated icons we are familiar with experiencing digitally and technologically, most of which are unknown or unacknowledged. These new threads/techniques touch on the ability to customize and capture our daily experiences.”
