About
Mary Lee Bendolph
b. 1935
Mary Lee Bendolph is one of the most well-known and revered quilt makers from Gee’s Bend, Alabama. She works with scraps of old fabric, especially from worn clothing because they are imbued with love and spirit. Her work is in many private and museum collections and has been featured in exhibitions internationally.
“Folks call some of this kind of stuff “crazy quilts”—don’t know which-a-way it going. I never did go by a pattern. Didn’t none us. I mostly take after my aunt Louella, but I never make a quilt altogether like anybody.”
