Loretta Pettway

b. 1942

One of the few of Gee’s Bend quilters to learn to sew out of necessity over enjoyment, Loretta persevered and learned to make quilts from her grandmother, Prissy Pettway. Despite long hours working the fields and caring for her handicapped brother, she pieced her first quilt around age 11. Her quilts are in private and museum collections nationwide.
