  • For the past twelve years, Christopher Derek Bruno has conducted experiments into the nature of perception and cognitive visual experience. His work is an ongoing investigation into what happens between a source of visual stimuli and the mind : how sensory input transforms into spatial awareness. This inquiry is driven by the belief that understanding visual perception may offer insight into broader principles that shape the human experience. His work frequently engages with the liminal spaces / places / events / moments that define so much of our experience within the built environment. Drawn to the expanse where perception becomes fluid; his effort invites the viewerʼs presence to activate the work, seeking to reward one's time / movement / intention.

Brunoʼs current investigations focus on translucent media, examining their material and volumetric properties. Expanding on his established vocabulary of low-relief sculpture, these studies work in developing the foundation for free-standing installations + large-scale architectural integrations. Working within the framework of print traditions, Bruno investigates the production and perception of color, leveraging the precision of emerging digital processes to surpass the limitations found in the practiced hand. His color-based compositions are achieved through parametric modeling; where scale / shape / density are systematically articulated in order to affect the translation of images into the subtractive color model found in process printing. This approach has introduced new layers of flexibility + control, allowing for dynamic interplay between structure + abstraction; advancing his exploration of the image as both a perceptual and material phenomenon. By harnessing light as both subject and medium, this work explores its transient, physical, and experiential potential.

With a foundation in industrial design + two decades of experience in the wood shop, Brunoʼs process integrates : empirical research, rapid prototyping, CAD, model-making, and full scale CNC production. His background in functional design informs a sensitivity to structure, proportion, and spatial relationships. Using both physical + digital tools, mathematical principles, and a deep understanding of material properties, he hopes to distill complex visual information + expose underlying / universal structure. His practice has become a lifelong pursuit in fostering earnest curiosity + reflection : seeking balance between intuitive exploration and systematic precision to illuminate the unseen forces shaping our shared experience. The evidence of these efforts serve as meditations on beauty / invitations to intentional states of perception / elevations of fundamental concepts as forces capable of shifting perception / dissolving fear / deepening our engagement with this life.
