SEARS PORTRAIT PROJECT, 2003 - present (ongoing)

For the Sears Portraits, the trio of SuttonBeresCuller, have relied on Sears photo department and their own various individual skills for make-up, costume and concept to create myriad views of themselves in different guises. The artists would regularly schedule time at Sears with their ideas, props, clothing and cosmetics, and then work with the much amused or annoyed technicians there to snap their photographs. Puzzle - A Painting in 150 Parts
A large, singular painting broken into its constituent parts. Each puzzle piece was laser cut from a wooden blank, assembled as a whole and then painstakingly painted. The pieces were presented in the gallery on long stacked shelves with each 7 x 7 inch piece being shown as its own unique whole, whether completely abstract, landscape, still life, or partially figurative. Eventually the artists hope to exhibit the pieces back together, revealing the overall painting.

SuttonBeresCuller is a group of three Seattle based artists—John Sutton, Ben Beres, and Zac Culler—who have worked collaboratively since 2000. The trio’s work ranges in presentation from gallery works, to installation, performance, and public projects. Working in and outside of traditional gallery settings, they aim to engage and provoke unsuspecting audiences with their works which are often not what they seem. Their work plays on identity, perception, and instinct. They create playful scenarios by reinterpreting archetypal objects and transforming them in material, space, and place.
SuttonBeresCuller graduated in 2000 from Cornish College of the Arts. They have exhibited throughout the Northwest, including at Henry Art Gallery, Seattle Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Frye Art Museum, On The Boards, CoCA and Suyama Space. The artists have received several grants and artist’s residencies. They were awarded the Luminary Northwest Artist Award for sculpture from the Museum of Northwest Art in 2016.
