Ed Wicklander
Mostly Cats
June 6 - July 13, 2019
Opening Reception: “First Thursday,” June 6, 6-8pm
Artist talk: “Saturday After”, June 8 at noon
Greg Kucera Gallery is pleased to present our eleventh one-person exhibition of sculpture by Seattle artist Edward Wicklander. Wicklander is a craftsman of diverse talents. His work involves many different techniques including wood carving, blown and cast glass, metal-smithing and welding, bronze casting, and an intriguing combination of materials. Wicklander sees his forte as his “ability to use very different materials to their greatest advantage.”
This current exhibition, Mostly Cats, returns to a subject the artist has explored many times. As with artists before him from the Egyptian tomb artists, to Japanese scroll and screen painters, to modern artists such as Foujita and Lalique, cats have held a particular fascination for Wicklander, both as studio cats and as house cats. His several cats are honored—or memorialized—in this body of work. Other images include large rope knots also carved in wood.
“Many of the ideas in these works are revisited and redeveloped from images familiar throughout my career. Because my practice has never been limited to a single medium, I have chosen the qualities of specific materials to convey the distinctive nature, appearance, and behavior of each cat. ”
