The substrate of the painting is a piece of bass wood which is a soft wood. It has been surfaced with a mallet and chisel and chipped off the top of the board. This action gives the surface an undulation. The idea came from looking at Medieval paintings which appeal to her because the surfaces aren't flat and the wood was warped. Starting with something flat and giving it an undulated surface reminds her of working on the thin and old papers she uses. Surfacing the boards seemed more organic. Lynne has always been interested in the collaboration between the medium and the substrate. For example, with this piece once the surface was worked she then knew what to paint. She responded to the surface. The process is the same thing when she chooses a paper and chooses which pencil and how hard the tip.
