DIAMANTE (FALL FROM GRACE) is a wall-mounted tapestry constructed from woven bra straps, lead, and over 10,000 hand-applied rivets. When fully outstretched, the piece mimics the artist’s own height and arm span, forming an abstracted self-portrait. Draped and sagging under the pressure of lead straps, lead weights, and rivets, the work evokes the tension, resilience, and vulnerability of the aging body.
The title, Diamante—a term referring to glittering ornamentation such as sequins or rhinestones—underscores Martz’s intention to view the marks and changes of age not as flaws, but as embellishments of experience. She describes the piece as a “gleaming ‘skin’... dimpled and sagging, tagged and discolored, but captivating—proof of beauty in the affectation of age.”
