Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) was the vision of Tatyana Grosman, a Russian émigré who had settled in New York with her husband Maurice, an artist with printmaking skills. In 1957, through connections with other artists, the Grosmans began inviting painters, poets and printmakers to create limited edition artists books in their modest garage studio on Long Island. These first intimate collaborations set the tone for the quality of work to be produced at ULAE in the decades to follow.
Early prints by Jim Dine, Helen Frankenthaler, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, and Larry Rivers gained Grosman the interest of museum curators and private collectors. Her reputation for ethical practices and high aesthetic standards propelled ULAE to the forefront of the burgeoning print market of the 1960s and 1970s. Grosman and her artists expanded the horizons of what we know as a limited edition print and her prints became the examples by which other studios editions were often judged.

Bill Goldston began working fulltime as a printer at ULAE in 1969. His keen interest in experimentation influenced many of the remarkable editions of the 1970s by artists such as Marisol, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist, and Cy Twombly. Upon Grosmans death in 1982, Goldston became the director of ULAE, and introduced another generation of artists to the tradition of working with master printers.
Taking suggestions from his trusted advisors, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, Goldston encouraged Carroll Dunham, Bill Jensen, Elizabeth Murray, Terry Winters and Susan Rothenberg to make prints in the ULAE studios.
With Ellen Gallagher, Jane Hammond, Julian Lethbridge, Lisa Yuskavage, Cecily Brown, Suzanne McClelland, Richard Tuttle and Kiki Smith, arguably some of the finest painters and sculptors working today, daring and intriguing editions were been created.
With a selection of new artists working at the studios - Amy Cutler, James Siena, Jason Middlebrook, Orly Genger, Joey Kotting - Goldston has continued the fine lineage of printmakers at ULAE.
