Katy Stone | Commissions cloudwaterline, 2011 Click to enlarge any image below: Commissioned by the GSA's Art in Architecture program for the Federal Courthouse in Jackson, MS, this work activates and unites a long promenade in the entry of the courthouse with a glass ceiling and curved wall. The work interacts with natural light in order to create a glimmering and reflective perceptual sensation as viewers pass by, and suggests both water and sky. Moving from cool blue to warm blue across the 65 foot expanse, the piece imparts of sense of slow change and balance to reflect the mission of the court. willowcloudwavescape, 2009 Click to enlarge any image below: A single set of linear gestures creates three different landscapes on the main walls of the correctional facility lobby. The compositions shift to suggest a cascading willow tree, a bank of clouds and an open body of water, underscoring the idea of transformation. Designed to create a feeling of expansiveness in an architectural setting that is about confinement, the works stretch horizontally and vertically, causing the viewer to look up and outward, beyond the walls. The color and hand-painted surface add warmth and tactility to the space.
