Beginning in 2002, Simmons worked in acrylic using a layering technique derived from his watercolor paintings. By alternating between layers of transparent colored medium and opaque dots or bands, he created the deep, luminous surfaces that you see here. This layering technique eventually led to the more complicated luminous imagery of his 2005 and 2008 exhibitions.
