For his October 2005 exhibition, Simmons produced a new body of acrylic paintings. Though technically related to his preceding watercolor and ring paintings, these works have a smooth, sanded surface and an almost photographic illusion of luminosity.
Simmons writes:
"Paint is a thick, opaque substance that can nevertheless be used to suggest light and space. The idea that a painter might occupy himself trying to devise a means to turn mud into light appeals to me, particularly since "imitation" and "illusion," are not normally among my painterly concerns. Light has poetic and spiritual significance as well, which an abstract painting can present to the viewer as experience rather than as discourse.
