Brice Marden's recent prints are inspired by his painting study for the Muses (Eagles Mere Version), 1991-94/1997-99. This painting, completed at Eagles Mere, the artists property in rural Pennsylvania, explores the mythic origins of the nine Greek Muses. The prints, completed at Gemini studios over the last two years, can be considered themes and variations of one another. Using two etching plates of crosshatches and a combination of calligraphic abstractions on lithographic plates, Marden printed the series with various colors, tonalities and combinations of plates to produce nine distinct prints. The prints themselves range from soft and subtle to graphic and painterly.
